Fair Hiring: Best Practices in Staff Recruiting
Attracting and hiring the most qualified candidates to fill staff positions are essential to achieving our mission at UC Santa Cruz. Fair Hiring: Best Practices in Staff Recruiting is one of several UC Santa Cruz mandatory trainings. In this training, you will learn campus best practices to ensure fairness and excellence in all stages of the recruitment process.
About This Training
Who should take this training?
This training is mandatory for hiring managers and search committee chairs. Hiring managers and those serving as search committee chairs must renew their training every three years to be in compliance.
How long will it take?
The training should take approximately 90 to 120 minutes to complete. You do not need to complete the training in one sitting.
What topics are included?
The training covers topics such as: developing effective recruitment plans, search committee roles and responsibilities, evaluating applicants, tips for conducting interviews and reference checks, and selection for hire. It also includes a discussion of bias theory and first impressions, benefits of a diverse workforce, and provides an historical perspective of and information about laws and policies related to equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, and applicants with disabilities.
Course Completion Requirements
To meet the compliance requirements for this course, you will be required to complete several activities throughout the presentation and a short assessment at the end of the last module.

Fair Hiring: Best Practices in Staff Recruiting is now accessed via the UC Learning Management System (LMS). LMS provides employees and supervisors the ability to easily access, track, and manage training needs.
Necessary revisions to the content made in spring 2013 and the move to LMS resulted in minor inconsistencies in the audio, slide design, and appearance.
