Staff Affinity Groups

What are Staff Affinity Groups (AGs)?

Staff Affinity Groups (AGs) are employee-led, identity-based collectives designed to support UC Santa Cruz staff by fostering connections, advocacy, and community. These groups offer a space for employees with shared identities, experiences, or goals to come together to support each other, address shared challenges, and advocate for their needs within the workplace. While the CP/EVC’s office supports Faculty Community Networks, Staff AGs are supported by ODEI and the Chancellor’s Office.

Grassroots Approach and Flexibility

Staff AGs are created by employees for employees, using a grassroots model that allows them to shape their group’s goals, develop recruitment strategies, and lead with intention. Each AG is empowered to define its mission, focus areas, and operational structure to best meet the needs of its members. This member-led approach ensures that AGs are directly responsive to the voices and interests of their communities.

Requirements for Institutional Recognition

To be formally recognized and supported by the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI), AGs must submit bylaws outlining their purpose, structure, and guiding principles. These bylaws help create a framework for continuity and transparency, which is essential for ODEI funding and resource allocation. Once approved, recognized AGs gain access to a range of ODEI resources, including funding for events, meeting spaces, and administrative support.

ODEI’s Commitment

  • Alignment with Campus Goals: ODEI works closely with Staff AGs to ensure their missions align with the broader goals of UC Santa Cruz, contributing to a campus climate that values inclusion, equity, and mutual support.
  • Resources and Support: Recognized AGs receive support that may include program funding, logistical assistance, access to meeting spaces, and administrative resources to help them operate efficiently and sustainably.
  • Community Coordination: ODEI encourages collaboration among AGs, supporting cross-group events and shared initiatives to foster a cohesive, supportive community.
  • Supporting Best Practice: In keeping with California law, AGs, “ERGs” (Employee Resource Groups), and similar professional development and retention efforts are best practices designed to support everyone by building shared understanding and deepening community on common themes. They may not limit or restrict membership or attendance by race or sex and are accessible to all staff members.
