Nomination Criteria

The Chancellor’s Achievement Awards for Diversity recognize UCSC campus partners for the work that they do that contributes to fostering, creating, and sustaining a healthy campus climate. Awardees engage in work that promotes the important contributions that underrepresented individuals and groups bring to bear to the mission of the institution. Further, awardees create, develop and execute programs/projects/initiatives that educate about and reflect equitable practices, and that are inclusive in scope and depth. The criteria for each award category include the extent to which their work:

Has an Impact through:

  • scope of outreach and/or quality of outreach
  • change and transformation of campus climate

and is also:

  • Innovative
    • New initiatives/projects
    • Renewed approach to previous initiatives/projects
  • Intersectional
    • Initiatives/projects/work developed within an intersectional framing
    • Increase in community connections
  • Sustainable
    • The prospect for the longevity and/or legacy of these project/initiatives
    • Lasting and/or replicated (use as a model for other divisions/units/offices)

Please refer to each specified award category for some examples of work that reflect the various criteria to assist you in submitting a comprehensive nomination packet. Please note that not all examples are exhaustive, and some projects may reflect an overlap in criteria.

 

Staff Criteria

Impact:

  • Developed projects/initiatives/approaches that reached a wide campus and/or community audience/participants
  • What was the overall quality of the impact of the projects/initiatives/approaches on campus and/or community audience/participants
  • Developed projects/initiatives/approaches that expanded opportunities for the professional development of staff and/or academic development of students, including educational programs and/or trainings and workshops

Innovative:

  • Created and/or implemented creative approaches to mentoring or leadership development for students, staff, and/or faculty
  • Created and/or implemented creative approaches to recruit and/or retain students, staff, and/or faculty from underrepresented groups
  • Created and/or implemented innovative approaches to support the academic success of students from underrepresented groups.
  • Organized innovative campus, departmental and/or divisional event(s) that fostered community building through activities that illustrated inclusive practices.

Intersectional

  • Advocated for and fostered a healthy campus climate through inclusive programming and/or initiatives that address hate/bias incidents and interactions.
  • Created community-building programs for students and/or staff from.

Sustainable

  • To what extent will the staff member’s respective unit/division/office continue with this project/initiative/approach
  • To what extent can this project/initiative/approach be modeled by other units/divisions/offices

 

Student Criteria

Impact

  • Participated in or created programs/initiatives on campus or in the colleges that assist in addressing students’ concerns and/or ideas about diversity, equity and inclusion.  
  • Organized campus, departmental and/or divisional event(s) that fostered community building through activities that illustrated inclusive practices.

Innovative

  • Created and/or implemented creative approaches to mentoring or leadership development for students.
  • Created and/or implemented innovative approaches to support the academic success of students from underrepresented groups.

Intersectional

  • Advocated for and fostered a healthy campus climate through inclusive programming and/or initiatives that address hate/bias incidents and interactions.

Sustainable

  • Created community-building programs for students from underrepresented group
  • Participated in programs and/or conferences to hone leadership skills to assist in addressing diversity, equity and inclusion on campus.

 

Academic Employee (Senate Faculty, Lecturer, Researcher, etc.) Criteria

Impact

  • Mentored or, participated in leadership development for, undergraduate and/or graduate students, staff, and/or faculty
  • Expanded opportunities for the professional development of staff, including educational programs and/or trainings and workshops

Innovation

  • Created and/or implemented creative approaches to recruit and/or retain undergraduate and/or graduate students, staff, and/or faculty from underrepresented groups
  • Implemented creative strategies to increase the PhD pipeline for underrepresented groups.
  • Applied effective/innovative strategies to meet affirmative action goals

Intersectional

  • Organized innovative campus, departmental and/or divisional event(s) that fostered community building through activities that illustrated inclusive practices.
  • Adopted inclusive pedagogical practices in the classroom as recognized in teaching evaluations

Sustainable

  • Promoted greater understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion through research, publications, teaching/training and/or other modalities.

 

Student Organizations Criteria

  • Made substantial contributions to and/or expanded opportunities for leadership development of students from underrepresented groups.

Innovation

  • Implemented new creative approaches to mentoring or leadership development for students.
  • Established new and creative approaches to recruit/retain students.
  • Created and implemented innovative approaches to support the academic success of underrepresented students

Intersectional

  • Created community-building programs for students from underrepresented groups.
  • Implemented successful initiatives that promoted a more diverse and inclusive environment including initiatives which address identity-based conflicts and hate/bias incidents.
  • Organized innovative campus, departmental and/or divisional event(s) that fostered community building through activities that illustrated inclusive practices.

Sustainable

  • Created programming/initiatives that the organization will continue to utilize moving forward
  • Created programming/initiatives that can be modeled by other organizations
