UCSC Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) invites nominations for the 6th Annual Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) Award, a Chancellor’s Achievement Award for Diversity that will honor and showcase people, programs, and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to promoting the success of women in science and engineering at UC Santa Cruz. Eligible recipients include undergraduate and graduate students, student organizations, academic and staff employees, campus units (e.g., offices, departments, or divisions) and academic or administrative programs.  

Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) at UC Santa Cruz is an organization run by graduate students, which welcomes the participation of undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and professionals in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.  In the face of historical, present, and future challenges, the overarching goal of WiSE is to advance women in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields both in percentage and position. To achieve this goal, WiSE uses a strategy of recruitment and retention: we seek to increase the participation of women in the STEM fields, as well as to enable the advancement and success of women in these fields. WiSE encourages its members to engage in mentorship, networking, and outreach, as well as seminars and discussions to further learning.

 

Awards Criteria

Eligible individuals, organizations, or programs who have substantively promoted the success of women in STEM by creating programs, providing professional support, mentoring or implementing innovative approaches to achieve one or more of the following:   

  • Fostering community to promote networks that provide professional and academic support for women in STEM 
  • Mentoring or leadership development
  • Recruiting, retaining, or advancing women in STEM
  • Supporting the academic success of women in STEM
  • Professional development of skills that will aid in career success, especially those skills at which women traditionally struggle (e.g. negotiating a contract, working assertively as part of a team, etc.)
  • Promoting awareness of issues affecting women in STEM

These achievements should be above and beyond typical organization activities, job duties, or program expectations.

 

Nomination Process

Students, faculty, and staff employees are invited to nominate eligible individuals, units/divisions, organizations or programs for the award.

The nomination form must be submitted electronically via this nomination form. In order to allow for full appreciation of the nominee’s accomplishments, nominators are strongly encouraged to provide supporting documentation that demonstrates exceptional diversity-related achievements which align with awards criteria.  

  • Examples of appropriate supporting documentation include but are not limited to: letters or testimonials from service recipients or program participants;  program or event evaluations; copies of flyers and/or media coverage about an event, program or initiative; reports and/or data demonstrating diversity-related outcomes; and other written or multimedia materials documenting the activity for which the nominee is nominated.)  
  • Supporting documentation must be sent electronically as attachments to the nomination form.  We strongly suggest that supporting documentation is submitted in PDF format.

WiSE Award recipients will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of representatives from the following groups:

  • Staff Advisory Board (SAB)
  • Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI)
  • Academic Personnel Office (APO)
  • Staff Human Resources (SHR)
  • Student Union Assembly (SUA)
  • Graduate Student Association (GSA)
  • Student Resource Centers
  • Former Award Recipient

Nomination Deadline: Nominations and supporting materials must be received by 5pm, Wednesday, April 1, 2020.
